Linda Koffenberger - Featured Artist 2006

Linda Koffenberger, CPSA

Linda Koffenberger has been drawing and painting in earnest only since she retired in 2003, although she has wistfully roamed the halls of museums and read art history books since her college days. Her first and only formal art instruction was a drawing class when she was ten – a class so inspiring, it fueled a lifelong interest in Art. Linda’s approach is experimental and exploratory. She will try anything and she is indebted to the wonderfully accomplished colored pencil artists who have passed on their techniques and tips in colored pencil instruction books and workshops.

Linda prefers working on paper and Mylar® surfaces in colored pencil and in mixed medium of colored pencil/ pastel and colored pencil/watercolor. She is a Signature member of the Colored Pencil Society and has had her work selected into the CPSA International Exhibition in 2004, 2005 and 2006. She won a Friends of CPSA Award in 2004 and the CPSA Award for Exceptional Merit and the CIPPY trophy in 2006. She also won Best in Show in the “Flora and Fauna of North Carolina” Exhibition at the Art Museum of Chapel Hill in June, 2006.

Linda is an instructor in the Botanical Illustration Certificate Program at the North Carolina Botanical Gardens at UNC-Chapel Hill and teaches classes on colored pencil at the Sertoma Art Center in Raleigh, NC. She is a member of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators (GNSI) and is a past member of the CPSA Governing Board.

Linda’s style is representational and she prefers compositions depicting the everyday things around us that get overlooked as we zoom through our day getting our “to do” list done. She strives to create a quiet moment or something slightly unexpected in her compositions, hoping the viewer will pause for a second look before rushing on. She is also fascinated by how people perceive motion and wants to create compositions in which the viewer senses an action about to happen.

Linda states that she will continue to be a student of fine art for the rest of her life.
