32nd CPSA International Exhibition Awards 2024

Brea Gallery, Brea, CA
July 31–September 15, 2024

Juror—Julie Perlin Lee, Executive Director, Laguna Art Museum

Juror’s Statement:

It has been my distinct pleasure to serve as juror for the 32nd annual Colored Pencil Society of America International Exhibition. I must confess, the process involved some truly difficult decisions, for which I seek understanding and forgiveness from all participants. I undertook this role with a personal motivation: as Executive Director of the Laguna Art Museum, which is dedicated to advancing California art and artists, I am committed to connecting with and understanding diverse artistic communities. I do not have the opportunity to see artworks in this medium often enough! While we have yet to meet in person, have a conversation, or even read your artist statements, my expectations were more than met through deep and direct observation of each artwork. Somehow, after spending so much time with each drawing, and if given the opportunity, I feel I could match the artworks to each artist!

This experience has deepened my appreciation for the mastery achievable through this medium in the hands of talented artists. I sought works that demonstrated ingenuity, pushed the boundaries of the medium, and transcended cultural divides, evoking profound emotional and intellectual responses. The artworks that stood out challenged my perceptions and left a lasting impression, showcasing confidence, attitude and surprising narratives sometimes joyous, sometimes somber and sometimes wonderfully wild.

Congratulations to all participants for their outstanding contributions. Thank you for enriching this experience—it has been an honor to know your remarkable talents.
