General Website Layout Rules

THE BASICS

  • Lines: Use no horizontal lines to define/separate areas.
  • Italics: Used for titles (artwork, publications, etc.) only.
  • Bold: Avoid bold except for artwork award titles in show galleries.
  • Subheads: Subheads are style heading 4 in all caps. No bold.
  • Secondary subheads: Paragraph style in all caps. No bold.
  • The word “NOTE:” should be all caps in paragraph style. No bold. No “Please note:” or other wording.

PAGE LAYOUT

  • All left columns need to line up with page title. Edit the section and set Columns Gap to No Gap.
  • Most pages should use the two-column section set to 60%/40%, with text on the left and an image on the right.
  • For pages that are text-heavy, use a two-column section set to 50%/50%. No image in most cases.
  • Links to PDFs to begin with the .png PDF icon, then add the appropriate PDF file from the Media folder (set words for link in Media folder).
  • Links are purple with underscore revealed upon mouseover.
  • No buttons other than “More” buttons on home page.

HYPHEN VS. EN DASH VS. EM DASH

  • The hyphen (-) connects two things that are intimately related, usually words that function together as a single concept or work together as a joint modifier (e.g., tie-in, toll-free call, two-thirds).
  • Em dashes (—) are created by holding down the Alt key and typing 0151. Em dashes are used primarily as separators or pauses in text, titles, etc. For example: BFFs—Save the Elephants
  • En dashes (–) are created holding down Alt key and typing 0150. En dashes are used primarily between a range of dates, such as January 1–February 15, 2017. En dashes specify any kind of numerical range, such as in indexes when a range of pages is cited (e.g., 147–149)

GALLERY AWARD PAGES

Set section Columns Gap to No Gap.

A location/dates/juror/awards text box will be located below the images. It has no background color but includes a 1 pixel border in #ddd8c4 hex color (same as main menu dropdown background color). Controlled under “Advanced” tab in Elementor.

  1. Gallery name, followed by the city and state abbreviation. Example:
The Mansion at Strathmore, N. Bethesda, MD)

  2. Dates of exhibition immediately below; use en dash with no spaces between days. Example:
    June 10–August 6, 2017

  3. Type the word JUROR in all caps, em dash (no spaces), and the name and title/position(s) of the juror. Use the wording on the table currently at http://www.cpsa.org/awards-galleries/international-exhibitions-history. Example:

JUROR—Joann Moser, Ph.D. in Art History, University of Wisconsin; Former Senior Curator of Graphic Arts at the Smithonian Art Museum

NOTE: Add a semicolon between title and position descriptions if necessary. Otherwise, no period is necessary in the juror description. For example: Dr. Edmund Pillsbury, Co-Owner, Pillsbury & Peters Gallery, Dallas

  4. Link to award donors uses Add Media to insert the appropriate donor PDF file. Then move the cursor to the left of the link text, click Add Media, and insert the PDF icon. The text for the link is automatically filled in from the title of the PDF in the media folder. Example:

    pdf file 2017 award donors

NOTE: Remove award donors PDF after 5 years
